This is the text of a letter I sent to the Everett Herald, our local paper, on July 5. I rather doubt that they'll publish it, but it expresses what I think about the need for a ban on assault rifles.--They did publish in on July 13, 2022.
When will it be enough? When will this country wake up and get reasonable about guns? Our nation is simply insane about firearms. We seem to consider the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms as the one constitutional right we have that is essentially unlimited. There is absolutely no legitimate reason for any civilian to own a military style weapon that can shoot more than a dozen rounds a minute. It is simply unconscionable that we allow the sale of such weapons in this country. I have had Canadian friends who just don’t understand how the United States can be so crazy about guns. I don’t either. For God’s sake we have to do something! Outlaw the sale and possession of AR style rifles now. Not tomorrow. Today! Nothing else even qualifies as sane.
